Dont You Think This Outlaw Bits Done Got Out of Hand

Waylon Jennings wrote and recorded "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand," released as the second single from his album *I've Always Been Crazy* in October 1978. The song peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and reached number 1 on Canada's RPM Country Tracks. Jennings re-recorded it in the mid-1990s with a slower, more regretful tone, dubbing it "Outlaw Shit," which was posthumously released on his 2008 album *Waylon Forever*.

The song reflects Jennings' personal struggles with drugs, culminating in a 1977 arrest after a package from New York City was traced to his Nashville studio. DEA agents raided the location, finding drummer Richie Albright at the control board. Jennings hid the package and noted an error in the warrant before Albright flushed the cocaine down the toilet.

After Jennings' death in 2002, producer Dave Cobb, alongside Jennings' son Shooter and his band The .357's, completed the re-recorded version for *Waylon Forever*. Cover versions include a duet by Shooter Jennings and Jamey Johnson on CMT Crossroads, James Hetfield's rendition on a tribute album, and Wheeler Walker Jr.'s performance on the podcast "Your Mom's House."
