Ian Burgess
Ian John Burgess (6 July 1930 – 19 May 2012) was a British racing driver who participated in 20 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix between 1958 and 1963, without scoring any championship points. His racing career began in 1950 with a Cooper Formula Three car and included a win at the Nürburgring in 1951. Moving to sports cars and Formula Two saw less success.
In 1957, Burgess raced for Cooper, achieving fourth place in the Oulton Park Gold Cup. The following year, he joined Tommy Atkins' team, winning races at Crystal Palace and Snetterton, with additional fourth-place finishes at Reims and Montlhéry. His Formula One debut came in 1958 with Cooper at the British Grand Prix.
In 1959, Burgess drove for Scuderia Centro Sud's Cooper T51-Maserati team, finishing sixth in the German Grand Prix. He continued with this team in 1960 without significant success. In 1961, he joined the American Camoradi International team, competing in five Grands Prix but failing to achieve a top finish higher than 12th. The next year, he moved to Anglo American Equipe, racing in three events with no better result than 11th place.
Burgess' final season was in 1963 with the Scirocco-Powell team, where he retired from both races he entered. He passed away in Harrow at the age of 81.
