Leptophis

Leptophis is a genus of colubrid snakes commonly known as parrot snakes, distributed across Mexico, Central, and South America. Taxonomically, they belong to the subfamily Colubrinae within the family Colubridae. The species relationships are illustrated in a cladogram, which identifies possible paraphyletic groupings.

These snakes exhibit slender builds with long tails. Their bodies can be cylindrical or slightly laterally compressed, with elongated heads distinct from their necks and large eyes featuring round pupils. Dorsal scales are arranged in 15 rows along the midbody. The maxillary teeth (numbering 20–32) form a continuous series without interspace, being longest posteriorly, while mandibular teeth are longest anteriorly.

The genus includes several recognized species and subspecies:

A note explains that species listed with binomial authorities were originally described in other genera before being reclassified into Leptophis.
