Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest 1963
Norway was represented at the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest by Anita Thallaug with the song "Solhverv," written by Dag Kristoffersen. The Norwegian broadcaster NRK selected the entry through Melodi Grand Prix 1963, held in Oslo and hosted by Odd Grythe. Five songs competed, each performed twice by different singers with a small combo and a full orchestra. The winner was chosen by ten regional juries. Initially, Nora Brockstedt won with "Solhverv," but she withdrew, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts. However, rumors suggested she considered the song substandard and did not want to risk damaging her reputation after two previous respectable Eurovision placements.
At the contest, Thallaug performed fifth in the running order. Norway finished last, tied with Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden, as "Solhverv" received zero points. The Norwegian jury awarded its 5 points to the United Kingdom. Controversy arose when it was alleged that the Norwegian jury changed their votes to help Denmark win over Switzerland.
Norway's participation in the 1963 contest was marked by both the withdrawal of the original performer and voting scandals, resulting in a poor outcome for the country.
