Sand Dune Park
Sand Dune Park in Manhattan Beach, California, is a public area featuring sand dunes used for physical activity. Established in 1964 on a converted dumpsite by local residents, it initially served as a small recreational space when the surrounding area was mostly beach cottages. The park has gained fame among athletes and media for its effectiveness as a workout spot.
In 2009, concerns over noise, traffic, and overcrowding led to its closure and fencing. Amidst controversy, including allegations of localism and racism, it reopened in August 2010 with restricted access by reservation only, enforced by hefty fines. An adjacent set of steps offers an alternative but prohibits jogging under stringent rules.
Despite studies showing a 45% drop in usage due to restrictions, the city maintained them but introduced additional access slots in late 2011. The park attracts prominent athletes like Troy Polamalu, Kobe Bryant, and others from various sports. Additionally, it is home to the rare Orcutt's yellow pincushion plant, an endangered native species found only in California coastal dunes.
