The Terminator Sega video game

The Terminator is a 1992 video game released for Sega consoles including the Genesis, Master System, and Game Gear. Based on the 1984 film of the same name, it was developed by Probe Software and published by Virgin Games. The game received praise for its graphics and sound but faced criticism for its gameplay.

The game is a platform shoot 'em up where players control Kyle Reese, fighting against Skynet's machines. Levels are set in locations from the film, such as a 2029 Skynet facility and 1984 Los Angeles streets. Each level ends with a battle against the Terminator, who must be defeated to progress. Players can use weapons like grenades and shotguns, but some enemies, like police officers, cannot be killed.

In the final level, Kyle battles the Terminator in a factory, leading to its destruction by machinery. Development involved digitizing movements of programmers David Perry and Neil Young using an Amiga computer and Deluxe Paint. Perry expressed frustration with Orion Pictures' restrictions, which limited the use of main characters like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Linda Hamilton.

The game was released in February 1992 for Genesis in the U.S., followed by UK releases in August for all platforms. The Game Gear version arrived in the U.S. in October 1992. Reviews praised its visuals and sound but criticized repetitive gameplay, lack of variety, and limited replay value. Some found the Genesis version too easy, while others deemed portable versions too challenging.
