Thetford Mines
Thetford Mines is a city in southern Quebec, Canada, located in the Appalachian Mountains. Known primarily for its historical role as an asbestos mining hub, it was founded in 1876 after the discovery of asbestos nearby. The city experienced significant economic growth in the 20th century, with seven mines employing thousands. Despite domestic bans on asbestos use, Thetford Mines exported globally until 2012 when its last mine closed, leading to diversification into manufacturing.
The city, approximately 95 km east of Montreal and 135 km northeast of Quebec City, has a humid continental climate (Dfb), marked by cold winters with heavy snowfall and warm summers with frequent rainfall. Thetford Mines has a population of around 26,000 as of 2021, reflecting slight growth from its previous count in 2016.
Recreational activities include winter sports like skiing and snowmobiling, cultural highlights such as a minor hockey team, the Thetford Miners, spring maple syrup production, summer festivals, and autumn foliage观赏.
