WZIP
WZIP (88.1 FM), a non-commercial educational radio station licensed to Akron, Ohio, operates under the University of Akron and broadcasts a college radio–programmed rhythmic CHR format known as "Z88." The station's studios are located in Kolbe Hall on the university campus, while its transmitter is based in Copley Township. WZIP also offers online streaming alongside its analog transmission.
Established in 1962 as WAUP, the station initially focused on educational and fine arts programming. By the mid-1970s, it shifted to a jazz format before transitioning to contemporary hit radio (CHR) by the mid-1980s. In 1989, the station adopted the WZIP call sign, referencing the University of Akron's athletics mascot, the Zips. This rebranding coincided with an upgrade in transmitter facilities, expanding its coverage area and improving reliability.
Throughout its history, WZIP has faced significant changes, including ending decades-long agreements with commercial stations for broadcasting athletic events and altering its programming to focus on hit music. This shift led to community backlash, including complaints from faculty members and public pushback. Despite these challenges, the station has expanded its coverage area over the years, increasing its transmission power in 1998 to reach cities like Cleveland and Youngstown.
Additionally, WZIP provides a subcarrier service for Seeing Eye Radio, a regional radio reading program for visually impaired individuals. This service is operated by Goodwill Industries and was acquired in 2009 after the previous operator faced financial insolvency.
