West Peruvian screech owl

The West Peruvian screech owl (Megascops roboratus), part of the Strigidae family, is found in Ecuador and Peru. It has two recognized subspecies: M. r. roboratus and M. r. pacificus, which may warrant separate species status due to distinct vocalizations.

The nominate subspecies measures 20-22 cm and weighs 144-162 grams, with gray and rufous morphs differing in coloration. M. r. pacificus is smaller (18-19 cm) and lighter (70-90 grams), with more common rufous morphs.

M. r. roboratus inhabits dry deciduous woodlands in Peru's Andes, while M. r. pacificus dwells in coastal scrub and forests in Ecuador. Both are nocturnal, feeding on insects and nesting in tree cavities; the nominate may also use nests of Pale-legged Horners.

Vocalizations differ: roboratus has a trill increasing in volume, while pacificus's song rises then slightly drops in pitch.

Despite being classified as Least Concern by IUCN, it faces threats from habitat degradation due to grazing and logging.
