Tanjong Pinang
Tanjong Pinang is a suburb in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, located 4.5 km northwest of the city center. It was developed on reclaimed land off Tanjong Tokong in the 1990s and includes Gurney Bay and Andaman Island. Originally known as Seri Tanjong Pinang, the project was first proposed in the 1980s by Chief Minister Lim Chong Eu. Phase 1 began in the 1990s but was halted during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Development resumed in 2003 under Eastern & Oriental Berhad, with Phase 1 completed by 2005. Phase 2 started in 2016, involving 760 acres of reclamation, and Gurney Bay partially opened to the public by 2024. The first phase of Andaman Island was completed in 2019, envisioned as a mixed-use precinct worth RM17 billion.
As of 2020, Tanjong Pinang had a population of 11,970, with ethnic Chinese making up nearly half, Malays about one-fifth, expatriates over 18%, and Indians at 6%. In 2022, Stonyhurst College established a sister school offering a British curriculum for students aged three to 18. Retail amenities include Straits Quay, a marina and shopping mall completed in 2010 with over 100 retail lots, 40 boat berths, the Performing Arts Centre of Penang (Penangpac), and a convention center. A Lotus's hypermarket opened in 2011, making it the third such store in George Town.
