John Lloyd referee
John Lloyd, born on 15 February 1948, is a Welsh former football player and referee. He played as an outside-right for Wrexham in two league matches between 1965 and 1967 before transitioning to refereeing. Lloyd began his refereeing career in The Football League, becoming a linesman in 1982 and advancing to the referees list by 1985. He was also part of the Welsh FIFA List as an international official.
Lloyd officiated in Europe, with his first match in September 1996 in Iceland, where Sporting CP defeated Akranes 9-0 in a UEFA Cup tie. Domestically, he gained prominence in 1993 by refereeing a League Cup quarter-final between Blackburn Rovers and Cambridge United. Later that year, he was selected as one of the officials for the new Premier League, retaining his status for the 1993–1994 season. One of his notable games was officiating a match between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town during the penultimate weekend of that season.
Lloyd’s final Premier League game occurred in 1996, after which he returned to The Football League for his last two seasons before retiring. At the time of his retirement, he was the last referee from North Wales on the Welsh National List, leaving Keith Burge as the sole representative. Post-retirement, Lloyd worked as a Football League assessor and an after-dinner speaker. His career is documented in various football records and publications.
