Southesk Parish New Brunswick

Southesk is a geographic parish in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is divided into three governance areas: the Indian reserve of Red Bank 4, the incorporated rural community of Miramichi River Valley, and the Greater Miramichi rural district, which are part of the Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission. Before 2023, all non-Indian reserve parts of the parish were part of the Southesk Local Service District. The name "Southesk" comes from its location south of Northesk Parish. Established in 1879, it was created by separating from Northesk Parish along the Northwest Miramichi River and a line starting at the mouth of the Little Southwest Miramichi River. The parish's boundaries have remained largely consistent since its creation, except for minor adjustments to clarify or redefine certain sections with neighboring parishes. Southesk is bounded on the north by lines near Route 385 and the Little Southwest Miramichi River, on the east by a line from the Northwest Miramichi River to Charles Vye Sr.'s grant, on the south by a complex series of property and river lines, and on the west by the York and Victoria county lines. The boundaries with Derby Parish were originally defined by a straight line but later adjusted to follow property and grant lines in 1920, requiring further clarification in 1953 and 1954. The parish includes parts of several communities, as well as bodies of water like the Northwest Miramichi River and Little Southwest Miramichi River.
