Tommy Watkins
Thomas Gray "The Mayor" Watkins, Jr., born on June 18, 1980, is an American former professional baseball player and current coach. He serves as the third base coach for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball (MLB). Watkins played in MLB exclusively for the Twins after a decade-long minor league career with the organization.
Watkins was drafted by the Twins in the 38th round of the 1998 MLB draft from Riverdale High School in Fort Myers, Florida. He became a fan favorite during his time with the Fort Myers Miracle (2002–2003), where he played multiple positions, including shortstop, third base, second base, and outfield, and even debuted at first base. His versatility and popularity led to a unique promotion, the "Tommy Watkins Bobble-Butt," in 2003.
Watkins made his MLB debut on August 10, 2007, after being promoted from Triple-A Rochester. He played nine games for the Twins, starting eight at third base and part of another at shortstop. His first major league hit was a single off Jarrod Washburn on August 15, 2007. Watkins tallied ten hits in 28 at-bats, all singles, before his season ended due to a torn groin muscle.
After retiring as a player, Watkins transitioned to coaching within the Twins' organization. He served various roles, including batting coach for the Beloit Snappers and Cedar Rapids Kernels. In 2018, he became the Twins' major league first base coach, furthering his involvement with the team.
