Dang Fong

Dang Fong (1877 or 1879–1955) was a disciple of Wong Fei Hung, a Chinese Kung Fu folk hero. Known as the "Tiger of Sai Gwan," he was recognized for his strict adherence to tradition in Hung Ga Kuen. Born in Sanshui, Guangdong Province, Dang Fong learned martial arts despite his father’s initial reluctance, eventually studying under Wong Yau and later becoming a student of Sin Ling at Wah Lum Temple, who taught him the Left-handed Plum Flower Spear.

Dang Fong began learning Hung Ga Kuen from Lam Sai Wing before becoming an indoor disciple of Wong Fei Hung. Wong focused Dang's training on Tit Da (Chinese Orthopedics) but later shifted to teaching him martial arts after observing his dedication. Dang learned various styles from other disciples, including the Fifth Brother Eight Trigram Staff and the Green Dragon Knife.

After gaining permission from Wong Fei Hung, Dang Fong opened a school in Guangzhou’s Sai Kwan District, known for its lion dancing. He later left China due to conflicts, settling in Hong Kong after the Sino-Japanese War. In 1948, he taught martial arts and lion dancing for organizations like the Kowloon Jewelry Association.

The Dang Fong branch of Hung Ga Kuen includes unique forms such as Gung Ji Fuk Fu Kuen, Fu Hok Seung Ying Kuen, and Tit Sin Kuen, with some created by Dang himself. His notable students include Chau Wing Tak, Lau Kai Tong, Ho Lap Tin, and Yuen Ling, ensuring his legacy in Hung Ga Kuen.
