Kolkata Little Magazine Library And Research Center
The Kolkata Little Magazine Library And Research Center is a private library dedicated to preserving alternative and experimental literary magazines in Kolkata, India. Established by Sandip Dutta on June 23, 1978, it began with a small collection of periodicals and has grown into one of the finest collections of its kind in India. Located at Tamer Lane in College Street, Boipara neighborhood, the library was founded after Dutta discovered the neglect of little magazines at the National Library in 1972.
Kolkata has a rich history in the Little Magazine Movement, dating back to Sabuj Patra (1914) and Kallol (1923). The library preserves rare and out-of-print magazines, including those from the Hungry Generation. It conducts seminars, exhibitions, and publishes Ujjwal Uddhar, a magazine reprinting old articles. The library has organized events like the All India Little Magazine Conference in 1993 and workshops for Santali Dogra writers.
With over 150 members as of 2020, including notable literary figures, the library also attracts visitors from across India and Bangladesh. It receives grants for digitization projects and actively participates in book fairs and cultural events to promote little magazines.
