Rembrandt Pussyhorse

"Rembrandt Pussyhorse," the second studio album by Butthole Surfers, was released on April 18, 1986, under Touch and Go Records. It features experimental rock music with heavy use of tape editing and sound modulation, incorporating instruments like piano, organ, and violin alongside the band's usual lineup. The album includes a cover of "American Woman" by The Guess Who and borrows themes from Fred Steiner’s *Perry Mason* theme music for "Perry." Some additional instrumentation was contributed by the recording studio owner, who played piano on "Creep in the Cellar" and organ on "Perry."

Notably, a backwards violin track from a previous recording session was accidentally kept in "Creep in the Cellar," adding an unexpected element. The growls on "Mark Says Alright" came from a pit bull named Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad, owned by the band.

The album was originally intended as an EP but evolved into a full-length project due to its expanding scope. Recording took place across multiple studios over several months, with most tracks recorded on 16-track equipment. The album faced delays and initially struggled for release but eventually surfaced under Touch and Go after the band replaced some tracks.

The album's experimental nature was praised by Timothy White of *Spin*, who highlighted its "loutish paranoia" and "contorted hip-hop crunch." It includes bonus tracks from their EP *Cream Corn from the Socket of Davis* on CD versions. Personnel included Gibby Haynes (lead vocals), Paul Leary (guitar, bass), King Coffey and Teresa Nervosa (drums), among others.
