Robert Nash Australian footballer

Robert Henry Nash (1884–1958) was a prominent Australian rules footballer known for his time at Collingwood and later as captain-coach of Footscray. Born to Michael Joseph "Mick" Nash and Mary Ann Nash, he married Mary Anne Ryan in 1906. His uncle Thomas Nash also played for Carlton. Robert began his football career with Northcote before joining Collingwood in 1904, where he became a key player, captaining the team in 1908 and 1909, and representing Victoria. He faced disciplinary actions, including suspension after an on-field incident in 1907 and a reported dispute with umpires in 1909.

In 1910, he moved to Footscray as captain-coach, leading them until 1912 when he retired from football. Post-retirement, Nash worked as a policeman but was discharged after participating in the 1923 Victorian police strike, moving his family to Tasmania where he managed a hotel and focused on nurturing his sons' sports careers. His son Laurie became a notable cricketer and footballer.

Nash passed away at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1958 while watching a match.
