Telecommunications in Jamaica

Jamaica's telecommunications sector is characterized by its integration into the North American Numbering Plan with area codes 876 and 658. The country has a fully digital telephone system, with 265,000 main lines and 2.7 million mobile users as of 2011-2012. The liberalization of the market in 1999 spurred growth in mobile services while fixed lines declined, achieving a teledensity of 110 per 100 people.

The mobile sector features three major operators: FLOW (formerly LIME), Digicel, and Claro. FLOW expanded its infrastructure with a new submarine cable and offers quad-play services, including advanced broadband. Notably, Digicel became the first provider to launch LTE in Jamaica in June 2016.

In broadcasting, Radio Jamaica Limited dominates both radio and television, operating multiple stations alongside about 70 other private radio outlets and two additional TV stations. Internet usage is significant, with 1.3 million users (46.5% of the population) as of 2012, managed under the .jm domain by MITS at the University of the West Indies.

Jamaica ensures internet freedom with no government restrictions or surveillance, supported by laws protecting free speech and press rights. Defamation was decriminalized in 2013, enhancing media freedom.
