Æthelred II, a king of Northumbria in the mid-9th century, has uncertain reign dates with varying scholarly interpretations. N.J. Higham suggests his rule from 840 to 848, while D.P. Kirby proposes an accession date of 844. David Rollason, considering numismatic evidence, places his reign around 854–862, noting Rædwulf's usurpation in 858. Æthelred was expelled by Rædwulf in 844 but restored after the latter's death fighting Vikings. He faced assassination later without further details. The stycas coinage, beginning under his father Eanred, continued during his reign, with many coins found in York. Confusion exists between Eardwulf the moneyer and Æthelred's grandfather. Written and numismatic evidence confirms that Æthelred was succeeded by Osberht.
