Memorial Hospital Cumberland
Memorial Hospital, originally known as Western Maryland Hospital, served the Greater Cumberland area from 1888 until its closure. Established in 1888, it moved to Memorial Avenue in 1929 and was renamed to honor World War I casualties. The hospital transitioned to a private non-profit organization in the early 1980s under the Cumberland Memorial Hospital Corporation.
In 1996, Memorial Hospital merged with Sacred Heart Hospital to form the Western Maryland Health System (WMHS). This collaboration allowed them to expand healthcare services by specializing: Memorial focused on children's health, orthopedics, trauma, and women's health, while Sacred Heart handled behavioral health, cardiac services, oncology, and outpatient care.
Construction of a new centralized facility began in 2006 on Willowbrook Road. The Western Maryland Regional Medical Center opened on November 21, 2009, leading to the closure of both Memorial and Sacred Heart Hospitals later that day. After closure, the former Memorial Hospital campus was leased by Ridgecrest Investments but underutilized. The lease ended in early 2012 when tenant occupancy was low, and all tenants were asked to vacate by year-end. The site remains owned by Cumberland and cannot be used as a hospital or competing healthcare facility. Memorial Hospital has since been demolished.
