Curriculum mapping
Curriculum mapping is a structured approach to reviewing and organizing the operational curriculum using electronic databases. Rooted in the work of Heidi Hayes Jacobs, it involves creating templates that outline key curriculum components: content, skills, assessments, and essential questions. Schools across various states, such as South Dakota and Indiana, have adopted this method, with some implementing it statewide and providing online resources.
The process emphasizes real-time input from teachers, allowing for shared access to curriculum data within schools. It follows a seven-step model aimed at aligning taught content with standards. Both consensus maps, which reflect district-wide agreement on essential elements like content and assessments, and individual maps, detailing specific classroom practices, are integral. While consensus maps focus on common standards and assessments, individual maps provide detailed daily activities and assignments tailored to each teacher's approach.
Curriculum mapping is used globally, including in independent schools adopting international curricula. Online tools facilitate continuous monitoring and adjustment of the curriculum throughout the academic year.
