North West 2
North West 2 was an English Rugby Union league at the eighth tier of the domestic competition, catering to teams in North West England. Promoted teams advanced to North West 1, while relegated teams dropped to North West 3. The division was abolished after the 1999–00 season due to restructuring by the RFU (Rugby Football Union), with teams being transferred to regional leagues such as South Lancs/Cheshire 1 or North Lancs/Cumbria.
The original teams in North West 2 when league rugby began in 1987 were: Burnage, Cockermouth, Heaton Moor, Leigh, Macclesfield, Newton-le-Willows, Penrith, Sandbach, Sedgley Park, Warrington, and Workington.
From 1987 to 1993, North West 2 operated as a tier 8 league with promotion and relegation systems. In 1993–94, the creation of National 5 North reduced North West 2 to a tier 9 league for the duration of National 5 North's existence (1993–96). With the cancellation of National 5 North at the end of the 1995–96 season, North West 2 reverted to tier 8. The introduction of North West 3 as a tier 9 league in 1996–97 meant that relegated teams from North West 2 now dropped to this new division. At the end of the 1999–00 season, further RFU restructuring led to the cancellation of North West 1, North West 2, and North West 3, along with their counterparts in the North East.
