List of RAF squadron codes
The Royal Air Force (RAF) identifies most of its units with a two-character alphabetical or alphanumeric squadron code, which is typically painted on aircraft belonging to that squadron. This code is often combined with an individual letter or character to form a call sign for specific aircraft, usually displayed next to the RAF roundel on the rear fuselage.
During World War II, when other Commonwealth air forces were attached to the RAF as Article XV squadrons (also known as 400 series squadrons), their squadron codes were often changed to avoid confusion with RAF units. This practice was particularly common during this period.
The Transport Command of the RAF applied three-letter call signs to its aircraft starting in 1944, which were extended to four letters by adding individual suffixes for each aircraft. From 1945 onward, these call signs were prefixed with an "M," creating five-letter sequences.
