The title of Earl Mount Cashell, in the Peerage of Ireland, was created in 1781 for Stephen Moore, 2nd Viscount Mount Cashell. He was the eldest surviving son of Stephen Moore, who had been created Baron Kilworth in 1764 and Viscount Mount Cashell in 1766. The first Earl sat in the Irish House of Commons before his elevation to the peerage. The title passed through several generations: the second Earl served as an elected Irish representative peer from 1815 to 1822, while the third Earl held this position from 1826 to 1883. The fourth Earl was succeeded by his younger brother, the fifth Earl. The titles became extinct upon the death of the sixth Earl in 1915.

Other notable family members included Richard Moore (1725–1761), eldest son of the first Viscount, who represented Clonmel in the Irish Parliament. The Hon. William Moore (died 1810), a younger son of the first Viscount, represented Clogher, Clonmel, and St Johnstown in the Irish Parliament. The family held several seats: Moore Park in County Cork, Galgorm Castle in County Antrim, and Mount Cashel Lodge in County Dublin.

The title holders were: Stephen Moore (1st Earl), Stephen Moore (2nd Earl), Stephen Moore (3rd Earl), Stephen Moore (4th Earl), Charles William Moore (5th Earl), and Edward George Augustus Harcourt Moore (6th Earl).
