Transport in Moldova
Moldova's transportation system includes railways, highways, waterways, pipelines, ports, merchant marine, and airports. Railways total 1,138 km (707 mi), using a broad gauge inherited from the Soviet Union, with infrastructure challenges but recent investments since 2003. Highways cover 12,730 km (7,910 mi), with 10,973 km paved and 1,757 km unpaved, facing significant disrepair.
Waterways include 424 km on the Dniester River and a small Danube access at Giurgiulești. Pipelines total 656 km for natural gas, with recent connections to Romania and Ukraine, ending Russian ties in May 2023.
Ports feature a small oil terminal on the Danube. The merchant marine had 147 ships and 2,526 seafarers in 2021. Airports include three operational ones, with Chișinău International Airport handling over 10 international destinations and 2.9 million passengers in 2019.
