Thomas George Townsend, born on 19 February 1971, is an English professional bridge player and writer. He was educated at Wellington College and Cambridge University and resides in Shepherd's Bush, London, with Ewa Kater and their son Max. Townsend has been a prominent British and England international for over two decades, holding the title of World Bridge Federation World International Master. Since 30 September 2013, he has been the Monday-Friday bridge columnist for *The Daily Telegraph*, also becoming the Sunday Telegraph bridge columnist in July 2019. In his career, Townsend has achieved numerous honors. Partnering with Jeffrey Allerton, he won the European Junior Championships in 1994 and the World Junior Championships in 1995. With David Gold, he finished third at the 2005 European Pairs in Tenerife and represented England at the 2005 Bermuda Bowl in Estoril. Townsend was part of the England open team that finished second to Italy at the 2008 Bridge Olympiad in Beijing. Partnering David Bakhshi, he helped England finish fourth at the 2012 European Championships in Dublin and reached the quarter-finals of the 2013 and 2022 Bermuda Bowls. In 2023, partnering Ben Handley-Pritchard, Townsend secured third place at the World Transnational Open Teams in Marrakech and was runner-up at the ACBL Blue Ribbon Pairs in Atlanta.
