Thomas Thành Thái Nguyễn was born on April 7, 1953, in Nha Trang, French Indochina. His family fled Vietnam by boat in 1979, spending 15 days at sea before reaching the Philippines and later immigrating to the United States in 1980. He joined the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette religious order in 1984, taking his first vows in 1987 and being ordained a deacon in 1990.

Nguyễn was ordained as a priest on May 11, 1991, by Auxiliary Bishop Peter Rosazza at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Hartford, Connecticut. He served in various parishes across Georgia and Florida, including roles as an associate pastor, parochial vicar, and eventually pastor at Christ the King Parish in Jacksonville, where he introduced Vietnamese Masses and established a community.

In 2017, Pope Francis appointed Nguyễn as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Orange. He was consecrated as a bishop on December 19, 2017, at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove, California, with Bishops Kevin Vann, Felipe de Jesús Estévez, and Robert Baker officiating.
