Fred J. Boyd was a multifaceted Australian professional, known for his roles as a pharmacist, qualified accountant, and radiographer. He significantly contributed to the field of hospital pharmacy by founding the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA). Boyd began his career in the 1920s as a hospital pharmacist in Victoria's mental hygiene section at Mont Park Mental Hospital.

In 1940, he joined the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, where he held positions including librarian and committee chairman. The following year, alongside Charles B. Macgibbon, he established The Society of Hospital Pharmaceutical Chemists, which later became SHPA. Boyd served as its first federal president from 1961 to 1965. His contributions were recognized with the Evans Medal For Merit in 1962, now known as the GSK Medal of Merit.

Boyd was also a prominent figure outside his professional life, serving as mayor of Heidelberg, Victoria, from 1955 to 1956. During this term, he met Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Additionally, he was a Justice of the Peace and played a key role in the Victorian Drama League, supporting amateur theatrics. He remained active in local sports clubs, holding leadership roles.

In 1978, SHPA established the Fred J. Boyd Award to honor individuals making outstanding contributions to hospital pharmacy in Australia. This award commemorates his vision, perseverance, and dedication to the field.
