Rhonda Natasha Robinson, known professionally as Lady May, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter born on March 6, 1974, in Long Island, New York. She is African-American with partial Asian descent and grew up influenced by artists like Elton John, Duran Duran, and Michael Jackson. At age fifteen, she dropped out of high school and began working as a hip hop dancer in music videos for LL Cool J and Jodeci, later transitioning to rap. Lady May's career started in the late 1990s under the stage name Mae West. She gained recognition after being featured by producer Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie on his 2000 album *Tell 'Em Why U Madd*. D-Dot renamed her Lady May and connected her with Crazy Cat Productions, leading to a recording deal with Arista Records in 2001. Her debut single, "Round Up," featuring R&B singer Blu Cantrell, was released in 2002 but did not achieve significant success. The planned follow-up single, "Dick & Doe," along with its music video and album *May Day*, were shelved due to the poor reception of "Round Up."
