Enchantment band
Enchantment was a soul/R&B band formed in Detroit, Michigan, by Emanuel "EJ" Johnson, Joe "Jobie" Thomas, Bobby Green, Edgar "Mickey" Clanton, and David Banks. They gained prominence in the mid-1970s with hits such as "Gloria," "Sunshine," and "It's You That I Need." The band was discovered by Dick Scott, a former Motown executive, and later worked with producer Michael Stokes.
Enchantment signed with Roadshow Records in 1976, releasing their debut album *Enchantment*, which featured the singles "Gloria" and "Sunshine," reaching numbers five and three on the R&B charts, respectively. Their second album, *Once Upon a Dream*, charted higher, peaking at No. 8 on the R&B albums chart and No. 46 on the Pop albums chart. The crossover ballad "It's You That I Need" topped the R&B charts.
Despite their initial success, Enchantment struggled to sustain popularity as they attempted to transition into disco music. Their later albums, including *Journey to the Land Of... Enchantment* (1979) and *Soft Lights, Sweet Music* (1980), saw declining chart performance. By the late 1980s, the rise of funk and rap further contributed to their decline.
In recent years, Enchantment released "God Bless America" in 2003 to support troops in Iraq. Jobie Thomas later left the group to form his own project. The band's discography includes several compilation albums, such as *Golden Classics* (1991) and *Sunshine: The Enchantment Anthology* (2017).
