George Nevill 1st Earl of Abergavenny
George Nevill, 1st Earl of Abergavenny (24 June 1727 – 9 September 1785), known as Lord Bergavenny from 1744 to 1784, was an English peer. Born in 1727 at Kidbrooke Park, Forest Row, he was the eldest son of William Nevill, 16th Baron Bergavenny, and Katharine Tatton. He succeeded his father as Baron Bergavenny in 1744 and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford.
In 1753, George married Henrietta Pelham, daughter of Thomas Pelham (d. 1737), and they had three children: Henry Nevill, 2nd Earl of Abergavenny (1755–1843); Lady Henrietta Nevill, who married Sir John Berney, 7th Baronet; and Rev. George Henry Nevill, who married Caroline Walpole and had issue including Catherine Caroline and Reginald Henry.
George was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Sussex in 1757 but resigned in 1761. He was created Earl of Abergavenny and Viscount Nevill on 17 May 1784 and died the following year, on 9 September 1785, at East Grinstead. His son, Henry Nevill, succeeded him as 2nd Earl of Abergavenny.
