Irhal
"Irhal" (إرحل), released in 2011 by Egyptian musician Ramy Essam, became a defining anthem of the 2011 Egyptian revolution. Composed entirely by Essam, the song's poetic lyrics expressed public frustration with President Mubarak's regime and called for his resignation, translating to "Leave" in English. Its simple acoustic guitar backing and memorable chants reflected the spirit of the Tahrir Square protests.
The song gained widespread popularity after a YouTube post went viral, contributing significantly to Mubarak's eventual resignation. Essam, who had spent time at Tahrir Square, was hailed as a prominent figure of the revolution due to "Irhal." However, upon returning to the square following Mubarak's announcement, he was arrested, beaten, and tasered.
"Irhal" received international recognition, being ranked third in Time Out magazine’s list of 100 songs that changed history. Essam’s success allowed him to perform across Britain, France, Germany, and Egypt, spreading his protest music globally.
The song's unifying power and its role as a revolutionary anthem marked it as a significant cultural and political milestone.
