The United States has state songs for 48 out of 50 states, selected by legislatures as symbols of regional identity. Notable examples include "Yankee Doodle," "You Are My Sunshine," "Rocky Top," and "Home on the Range." Some states have multiple official songs; Tennessee leads with 12, while Arkansas has an anthem and a historical song. Stephen Foster composed state songs for Kentucky ("My Old Kentucky Home") and Florida ("Swanee River"), while John Denver contributed to Colorado ("Rocky Mountain High") and West Virginia ("Take Me Home, Country Roads").
