"Live Undead" is Slayer's first live album, recorded in 1984 at Tiki Recording Studios in Glen Cove, NY, with a small audience of around a dozen people. Questions have arisen about whether the crowd noise was real or faked, but producer Bill Metoyer declined to confirm this, referring to it as an "industry secret." The album features seven tracks, including extended versions of songs from their earlier albums "Show No Mercy" and "Haunting the Chapel," such as "Black Magic," "Die by the Sword," and "Aggressive Perfector."

The EP begins with an energetic introduction to "Black Magic," performed faster and heavier than its studio version. Lead vocalist Tom Araya delivered memorable introductions, including a controversial remark about the pen being mightier than the sword. The album also includes dedications to fans, such as "Aggressive Perfector" to the Old Bridge Militia. Despite mixed reviews, with AllMusic's Ned Raggett calling it unnecessary but praising its standout moments, "Live Undead" has been re-released multiple times, including an expanded version in 2006.

The album marked Slayer's first collaboration with artist Albert Cueller, who designed the cover featuring the band as zombies. Overall, "Live Undead" is noted for showcasing Slayer's live performances, often exceeding their studio recordings in power.
