Mister Transmission
Mister Transmission (International) Ltd is a Canadian franchise specializing in transmission repairs, founded in 1963 by Jerry Etkin and Bruce Brillinger in Richmond Hill, Ontario. In 2013, ownership transferred to Responsive Brands, a private investment company. The company has grown to include 65 franchises across Canada, with its headquarters still located in Richmond Hill, employing over 300 people nationwide.
The concept arose when Brillinger, a mechanic, recognized the need for specialized transmission services. Etkin, an entrepreneur, provided the funding. The name "Mister Transmission" was inspired by a nearby "Mister Donut," suggested jokingly by Etkin. Franchising began in 1969 after establishing locations in Barrie, North Bay, Brampton, and Burlington.
Services include transmission maintenance with multi-check inspections: fluid checks, road tests, lift inspections (assessing neutral switch, engine rpm, throttle linkage, modulators, mounts, u-joints, fluid retention, electronic controls), and pan inspections. Repair services involve adjustments, replacements, and rebuilding, along with roadside assistance and vehicle pick-up.
Mister Transmission supports the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation since 2014, committing $50,000 annually. They raised $80,000 in 2014, $62,000 in 2015, and over $60,000 in 2016. The company has received awards including the Franchisee Choice Award from the Canadian Franchise Association (2015, 2016) and the Mayor’s Award (2010) and Business Excellence Award (2012) from the Richmond Hill Chamber of Commerce.
