Pembrey Sands Air Weapons Range
Pembrey Sands Air Weapons Range is located in Pembrokeshire, Wales, as part of the Defence Training Estate. Established after World War II, it served as a critical training facility for RAF squadrons and Polish Air Force units during the war. The range includes bombing and strafing targets, with unique features such as a beach environment for practicing landings on natural surfaces. Over the years, notable events occurred, including the capture of a German pilot who landed there in 1943 and crashes involving military aircraft in 1953 and 1968.
The facility also transitioned to civil use when Pembrey Airport opened in 1997, supporting activities like motorsports and model flying. Despite its closure in 2014, Pembrey Sands remains a significant part of military history, with nearby training areas continuing its legacy in defense operations.
