St Peters College Negombo
St. Peter’s College, also known as St. Peter's Central College, is a Roman Catholic school in Negombo, Sri Lanka, with over a century of history. It was founded on 2 July 1903 by French Catholic Priest Fr. Esric to provide education to children of fisherfolk in the region. Initially named "Banana Stall School" due to its proximity to the local banana market, it began with 33 students and three teachers: Messrs Simon, Wilbert, and Anthony, under the principalship of H.M. Faris.
In 1967, Fr. Stanley Mellwa and Minister of Education I.M.R.A. Iriyagolla declared the school a Maha Vidyalaya, leading to gradual development under principals P.A.D. Aquinas, P.A.P. Nonis, Jayanath Mendis, D.C.E. Madurasinghe, and M.C.O. Fernando. John Fernando became principal when the school was promoted to a Central School, followed by B.J.P. Perera. Under H.M.S. Bandara, the school expanded its infrastructure. After his retirement, K.D.S.T. Silva took over, and in 2013, K.D.W.D.R. Fernando assumed duties as principal.
Currently, St. Peter’s College has around 4,000 students from grades 1 to 13, offering education in both English and Sinhala mediums. The school is also known for its annual cricket match, the Battle of the Seagulls, against St. Sebastian's College, Katuneriya, which began in 2012.
